Water isotopic composition in ice core records is a favour proxy of past temperatures. This climatic signal is acquired across the
hydrological cycle from evaporation to the formation of snowflakes in Polar Regions. In between, an array of processes affecting the water
isotopes, which provide opportunities to study the atmospheric boundary layers and its exchange between the ice and the ocean. Making use of new infrared spectroscopy developments to measure in situ water isotopes in the field, it is now possible to monitor the variations of isotopic composition in the atmospheric, in the precipitation and the surface snow, and to use water isotopes as a tracer of the water cycle. In this seminar, I will provide examples of on-going projects using water isotopes to study the hydrological cycle in the three poles (Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Himalayas) and to identify the signature of climate change in ice core records.
